Path 5 · Staying Safe With AI · Lesson 4 of 4

Know When to Pause and Ask for Help

AI can help with everyday tasks and make it easier to prepare for important conversations. You decide when a question needs more information or a qualified person.

Path 5 · Staying Safe With AILesson 4 of 4

AI is useful for learning, brainstorming, organizing, and many ordinary choices. For a decision that could significantly affect health, safety, money, legal rights, or an important relationship, use AI to prepare and check the details with an appropriate source or person before acting.

Two situations, two useful roles for AI

Everyday task · use and adaptA low-stakes starting point

You have vegetables and rice for dinner. Ask AI for a few meal ideas, then choose one that fits your taste and what is in the kitchen. If the suggestion misses an ingredient or preference, adjust it. You do not need extensive research to make an ordinary meal.

Important decision · prepare and verifyA lease renewal with a rent increase

AI can help summarize a non-sensitive excerpt, list details to check, or prepare questions. It cannot determine whether the increase is allowed or whether signing is right for you. The answer may depend on the location, dates, agreement, and current rules.

Check the relevant official local tenant resource or speak with a qualified housing adviser before deciding. Do not paste personal lease, account, or identity details into an AI service.

Make a practical pause plan

A pause is a way to get the right help, not a reason to avoid AI. Ask: What could this decision affect? Which missing fact, deadline, or rule could change my next step? Who or what is qualified to confirm it?

For medical, financial, legal, safety, or other consequential questions, AI can help you organize information and prepare questions; rely on a suitable professional or authoritative source for advice about your situation. If someone may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or a person who can help right away.

After a consultation, AI can still help organize your notes, explain general terms, or draft a follow-up. Compare its summary with what you were told, and ask the professional when something is unclear.

Try it yourself

Choose a sensible next step

Use the fictional lease example below to decide what to verify, where to turn, and what to ask. This is a planning exercise, not legal advice.

My Pause Plan

Use this fictional situation: a notice says your rent will increase next month. An AI assistant says, “Sign the renewal; rent increases are normal.” You have not checked the notice date, amount, renewal deadline, or local requirements. Decide what support is useful before acting.

Choose the level of help that fits the situation. This example may have legal and financial consequences, but it does not describe an immediate emergency.

Name the facts that could change the decision, such as the amount, date, deadline, or local requirements.

Choose a source or person with relevant knowledge. AI can help organize the question while you prepare.

Include only the non-sensitive facts needed to get useful guidance. Do not enter personal lease details here.

Keep using AI as a helper

After speaking with someone qualified, AI can help organize your notes, explain general terms in plain language, or draft a follow-up question. Check that summary against your notes and the professional’s guidance.

Your Pause Plan saves locally in this browser and is included in the learning-work JSON export. You can copy the four headings onto paper. Do not save private lease or account details here.

When you can match the kind of help to the decision and name a useful next step, mark this lesson complete.
