Path 5 · Staying Safe With AI · Lesson 1 of 4

Protect Your Privacy When Using AI

Before you enter something into an AI tool, think about who should see it and whether the tool is approved for it.

Path 5 · Staying Safe With AILesson 1 of 4

Avoid sharing passwords, account numbers, private records, or details that identify another person. When possible, remove names and other details or practice with a made-up example.

Leave private details outKeep the useful context
“Help me reply to a customer about a delayed delivery.”

You can explain the situation without pasting the customer’s name, address, or order number.

Use a made-up exampleProtect real people
“Write a polite reply to someone asking when a package will arrive. I do not know the delivery date yet, so do not promise one.”

The example gives AI enough to help without including anyone’s real information.

Try it yourself

Rewrite a prompt without private details

Keep the useful context—the delayed delivery and the kind of reply you need—while removing information that identifies a real customer.

Make this prompt safer

Unsafe example: “A customer at [home address] with order [number] has a late package. Write my reply.” Keep the bracketed details as placeholders; do not enter real customer information.

Write a safer prompt that still gives AI enough context to help. Then explain which details you removed and why. Your notes save in this browser and are included in the learning-work JSON export.

Need help using another AI tab and returning here? Read the beginner’s guide. You can also write your answers on paper.

For example, describe the delayed delivery and the tone you want, without names, addresses, or order numbers.

Name the identifying details you left out and the useful context you kept.

Your answers save locally in this browser as you type. They are not sent to an outside service.

Try your safer prompt. When you are ready, mark this lesson complete.
