Give AI the Context It Needs

A little useful background can help AI shape an answer for the person and purpose you have in mind.

Context is the useful background for one step of your routine. A short context card helps AI shape a result without making up event details or needing private information.

Ask generallyAI has to guess
“Write an invitation.”

For the book swap, AI does not know the audience, tone, length, or whether the date and venue are confirmed.

Add useful contextSet simple limits
“Write a warm invitation for neighbors to a free, one-hour book swap. Keep it under 90 words and make it easy to scan. The date and venue are not confirmed, so use clear blanks and do not imply they are settled.”

The audience, purpose, constraints, format, and unknown details guide the draft without sharing a participant list or personal contact information.

See how context changes the draft

With no context, a draft may sound formal and include invented details such as “Join us Saturday at the library.” Adding the real purpose, audience, length, and limits makes a more useful draft. Telling AI that the time and venue are unknown should lead to blanks or a question, not a guess.

Before using the result, compare it with your context card: does it fit the audience and format, respect the constraints, and leave unknown details open? If you test it with an AI assistant, revise the card if the answer still misses something important.

Try it: use your card to request one short event invitation. Read it as a neighbor seeing the event for the first time. Underline any detail that is missing, unconfirmed, too long, or unsuitable for the audience; then adjust your card before keeping the result.

Reusable Context Card

A context card is a small set of facts and limits for one kind of task. Give AI only what it needs for this step; leave personal names and private details out.

Your work saves in this browser and is included in the learning-work export. It does not sync across devices; clearing browser data may remove it. You can use the same headings on paper and carry your notes forward.

What should this step accomplish? Example: invite neighbors to a free book swap.

Who will use or read the result? Example: neighbors who may be new to the event.

What limits matter? Example: welcoming tone, no cost, short enough to read quickly.

Name the useful shape. Example: a short invitation with a heading and three practical details.

Example: date, venue, accessibility arrangements, and contact method are not confirmed yet.

Your notes save as you type and are included in the local learning-work export.

Save your context card and check that it includes only useful, non-private details. Mark this lesson complete when ready.
