Set a Clear Goal for Your Project

A shared goal helps you and AI work on the same thing, one manageable step at a time.

Building With AILesson 2 of 5

Turn your idea into an outcome you can observe. A clear goal helps you decide what to include, what to leave out, and whether a first version is useful.

Give the project a clear purpose

Decide what “useful” means to you

For a welcome guide, useful might mean that a new neighbor can find a few trusted places to start. Keep unknown details as blanks until you can check them.

Set a broad goalLeave room for guessing
“Help me make a welcome guide.”

AI does not yet know who will use it or what it should include.

Describe the first versionAsk before filling gaps
“I’m making a one-page welcome guide for new neighbors. Help them find where to get local information. Suggest simple headings, and leave blanks for details I have not checked.”

Now define “useful”: for example, a new neighbor can find three verified starting points on one page. The goal says what the guide helps someone do; it does not promise that the whole neighborhood is covered.

Make success visible

“Make a great guide” is difficult to judge. “A new neighbor can find where to get local information and see when each detail was checked” gives you something to test. Choose a small number of criteria that match the purpose.

Boundaries protect the project from growing too quickly. Our example is one page, no cost, and only verified details; unknown phone numbers or hours stay marked for checking. You can change the goal later, but write down the change so you know what you are testing.

Try it yourself

Write a one-sentence project goal

Write an outcome, one or two observable success criteria, and a boundary for this first version. Compare them with your saved idea card.

Your notes save in this browser and are included in the dashboard’s learning-work export. They are not tied to a sign-in or synced to another device; clearing browser data can remove them. On paper, use the same headings and bring your notes to the next lesson.

AI can suggest, draft, and help you review. You make the decisions and choose what to keep.
