Brainstorm Ideas With AI

AI can help you get past a blank page by offering different ideas to choose from, combine, or change.

Path 4 · Creative AILesson 1 of 4

Tell AI what you are making and what kind of ideas you want. You can add a subject, mood, audience, or limit, then ask for a few different directions.

Start simplyPick a topic
“Give me an idea for a story.”

That gives AI a starting point, but it does not say what kind of story you want.

Add a few detailsExplore different directions
“Give me five original ideas for a cheerful short story about a surprising garden. Make each idea different and keep them simple.”

You can choose one idea, combine two, or ask for another set.

Generate options and choose against real limits

New to working between a lesson and an AI assistant? Read the beginner’s guide. It also explains a paper-only approach; no paid service is required.

Before sharing, remove names and sensitive details. Follow any workplace rules.

Worked example

For a five-minute read-aloud for young children, a garden story could use a lost mitten, a shy seed, or a noisy watering can. Compare each idea for audience fit, simple materials, and whether you can finish it in five minutes before choosing.

Prompt to try

First write your goal and limits below. The prompt will use those notes.

Help me with this creative idea options. Ask a question if something important is missing. Do not invent facts.

What I am making, who it is for, and my real constraints:
[add your goal and limits]

Give me a useful first draft, and list any assumptions I should check.

Check the first result before using it
  • Are the ideas meaningfully different, not just reworded?
  • Can you realistically do each one with your available time, tools, and budget?
  • Does the strongest option fit the intended audience?
  • Can you explain why you chose it and what you changed?

Name the project, audience, time or material limits, and what a good result must do. Do not include private details.

Paste or summarize the options. Label them so you can compare each one.

For each idea, rate audience fit, time/material fit, and originality from 1–3. Note the best fit and the biggest concern, rather than choosing only because it sounds exciting.

Choose one idea or combine specific parts. Request one targeted change that fits a constraint, then describe what you will make in your own words.

Practice without AI

Write three different ideas on paper. Score each for audience fit, effort, and materials from 1 to 3. Circle one and write one reason it fits your actual limits.

Your notes save in this browser as you type. They are included in the learning-work JSON export.

Save your chosen idea and why it fits, then mark this lesson complete when ready.
